El Clasico
Another Clasico special for all of you out there who think time cannot pass any slower. I personally cannot wait for Sunday (YES I KNOW ITS A DAY AWAY
) Anyhow, lets get started shall we..
1993/1994: Barcelona 5 – 0 Real Madrid – The Night of King Romario
An unforgettable game for Romario, the Brazilian who scored a hat-trick and lead Barcelona to the second biggest scoreline that was ever inflicted by Barcelona on Real Madrid. Johan Cruyff coached this Barcelona and the work he did was evident by the scoreline at the end of the match. The most notable names played in that match including the Bulgarian player of the century Stoichkov as well as Michael Laudrup. Zubizarreta, Bakero and Guardiola also played alongside each other. On the other end players like Ivan Zamorano, Luis Enrique (who would eventually switch sides) and the current sports analyst and former goalkeeper of Real Madird, Paco Buyo. Here’s a video this match
1994/1995: Real Madrid 5 – 0 Barcelona – Zamorano Avenges Real Madrid
Michael Laudrup seems to be a lucky charm because when he made the switch to our eternal rivals he brought along with him the same score that Real Madrid suffered in the previous season. He is the only player to have had the happiest 2 Clasicos and has never tasted a 5 – 0 defeat
. Zamorano also showed that he could dance as well as Romario by scoring a hat-trick. The same names were present however Stoichkov exited the game in a different fashion than that of the previous season. He was given a red card when Real Madrid were winning 3 – 0.
2001/2002: Barcelona 0 – 2 Real Madrid – Zidane & McManaman Lead The Whites To Glory
This was one of the rare matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid that took place on the European front instead of the domestic one. The match took place at the Nou Camp and was the first leg of the Champions League semifinal. Everyone was expecting a strong match with sparks flying. The return leg was also expected to be an unforgettable event but Real Madrid didn’t allow it to go that far. They beat Barcelona 2 – 0 by goals from Zidane and McManaman and that was followed by a 1 – 1 draw at the Bernabau. This match will always be remembered for the amount of people who watched it – over 500 million viewers!! The new century would be the downfall of Real Madrid in European and Spanish football and the rise of a dormant giant.. BARCA!

2002/2003: Barcelona 2 – 0 Real Madrid – The Return of The Traitor
The scoreline wasn’t something to be surprised at, nor should it have caused astonishment because it was only 2 – 0. This match is, in particular, known not for the game that was played but for the return of one Luis Figo. There was a traitor running on our pitch who made the move to Real Madrid for a measly fee of 56 Million dollars in the summer of 2000. The reason this reaction was provoked from the Barcelona players 2 years after his multi-million dollar transfer was because Figo didn’t play the first 2 Clasicos in the Nou Camp. His return in November 2002 was intensely loud and kept ringing in our ears for years to come. The Barca faithful burnt his pictures (yes in the stands
) and threw anything they had in their hands at him. Figo chose to ignore because after all it was just bottles and papers and such, but it hit its apex when *drum roll* a pigs head was thrown from the stand onto the pitch. Barcelona’s first goal came from another traitor, Luis Enrique. (Traitor to Real Madrid
)
2005/2006: Real Madrid 0 – 3 Barcelona – The Bernabau at Ronaldinho’s Feet
As I said earlier, the start of the new century slowly became the end of Madrid’s dominance on international and domestic fronts. It took time for Barcelona to pass them by but, in my opinion, Barcelona dominated football more than Real Madrid since the taking over of Frank Rijkaard in 2003. This match may be the one Ronaldinho cherishes the most in his heart due to the fact that the Bernabau faithful (who are kinda known to stab their team when they are injured
) applauded his performance and gave him a standing ovation. This match was the announcement of a new power shift, from Madrid to Barcelona. The Galacticos were no match for this attacking side. Ronaldinho’s goals made Sergio Ramos look like a school boy and Casillas could be seen raging at him.. *snicker* ^.^
2006/2007: Real Madrid 2 – 0 Barcelona – The Win That Gave Real Madrid The League
Many people would argue that this match wasn’t a title decider and that it was nice to beat Barcelona anytime and at any place. This match was the title decider that gifted Real Madrid the league a year later. The two teams ended the season on level points, but being in Spain, the idiots don’t look at our 45 GD to their 26 GD. The second game of the season which took place in the Camp Nou ended in a draw. When you look at the head to head statistic, they are ahead which practically gifts them the league. Anyhow, not much to say about this one. Here’s the video.
2006/2007: Barcelona 3 – 3 Real Madrid – The Most Entertaining Draw in El Clasico
This match embodies one thing and one thing only. Persistence. Persistence from both sides but in different forms. Real Madrid’s persistence in facing all the hardships before the game that made everyone predict that they would lose by a huge scoreline. Barcelona’s persistence throughout the game and until the last minute to not give up, and all that was possible because of one little magician, one who made his presence on the world stage noticed. Lionel Messi. The main reason that they were able to draw this game was because Barcelona were down to 10 men by the end of the first half. Every time Madrid would lead, Barcelona would equalize and it took a last gasp from a Messi-Ronaldinho combination to earn them the point and Messi his hat-trick.
2007/2008: Real Madrid 4 – 1 Barcelona – El Pasillo de Barcelona
If Real Madrid knew what was good for them, they would have not trounced us the way they did. But then again, I didn’t know that that trouncing would start a chain reaction so big that transformed us into European, Spanish, Cup and Super CupS Champions. Shortly after this game, it was announced that Rijkaard would be relieved from his duties as FC Barcelona manager and be replaced by one Josep Guardiola, an inexperienced coach who could not coach if his life depended on it.. Dude what were we thinking
! To make it worse (and more bitter) we had to perform El Pasillo which involved us applauding the “champs” as they made their way onto the pitch. Eto’o and Deco deliberately earned yellows so that they would miss this match and not have to applaud them. We were thrashed by 4 goals and then Henry added one to reduce the deficit and give the scoreline a much respectable (ya right) look.
2008/2009: Real Madrid 2 – 6 Barcelona – Why You Should Never, EVER Attack Us
Barcelona started the season on fire, grabbing all the points they could get and reaching the final and semifinal of the Cup and Champions League respectively. Barcelona had beaten Real Madrid in the first Clasico by 2 goals to nil by way of Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi. Funny enough, it was Juande Ramos’ first game in charge. After that game Real Madrid went on an 18 game unbeaten run with 17 wins and one draw. That says a lot about a manager who they willingly let go (to Barcelona’s advantage
). It was that 19th game in which they lost that streak, to non-other than Barcelona. They went out to attack and so did we, they got the first goal and shortly after so did we. We then got the 2nd and 3rd, while they got the 2nd. We got hte 4th, 5th and 6th to shut Marcelon and VDV’s mouths for good and all but decide La Liga. The highlight of that match was the fact that the supporters were predicting how they would win, and when they lost they would say that their players were injured. Pfft, yeah right. This remains the most exciting Clasico of all time (pending the result tomorrow
)
With that we come to the end of the most exhilarating 9 matches ever played between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Do you think we will have another exhilarating match to add to this tally tomorrow? I’m hoping so, but by way of Barcelona and not by way of Real Madrid
Keep posted for the latest articles and editorials here on FCBB, I should have another article up shortly.
